University of Kentucky researchers used MRI to show that brain white matter (shown in red) degrades in elderly people at risk for Alzheimer’s.  The white matter is the “telephone wire” of the brain, and when it degrades it can interfere with transmitting new memories.  This might be useful as a way to diagnose at-risk people early and catch disease even...

EarthSky Answers: Is it true we only use 10% of... →
Short answer?  No, that’s not true.  Your brain uses a ton of energy, and so it only turns on a small portion at a time to conserve it.  But almost the entire brain is used at some point during the day, assuming you do a wide range of complex thought. (No word on whether Tumblr counts as complex thought) More at EarthSky

Richard Dawkins: The Age of the Genome Episode 1 →
A new series on BBC Radio 4 features Richard Dawkins celebrating the history and significance of sequencing the entire human genome … all those little A’s, C’s, G’s and T’s that make up what you are. What can we learn about our history and future from the letters in our genome?  Assuming I remember to, I’ll post links to these episodes regularly.  Guests in...

Can scientists predict the best soccer players? →
Scientists at Northwestern University are using computational modeling to analyze the performance of soccer players and predict how good a player is.  Will it work?  Who knows … computers are pretty smart these days. Now if only computers could do something about FIFA referees from Mali …

Popping bubbles make ever smaller bubbles, and so on … More of my fascination with high-speed video of completely normal occurrences.  Here’s some bubbles popping on water.  Yeah, it got into the journal Nature.  How ‘bout that? (via Wired Science)

I have returned!
I am back from my hiatus.  I am sure you have missed all the fun science out there while I was gone.  Thanks for asking, my honeymoon was great and it’s a nice reminder that it’s ok to just turn off all your electronic devices sometimes and the world goes on fine without you! Now back to the fun …!  If you have any science questions, ask me!
