which features a video of things to come as based on 1994 expectations:

NIH Wins Appeal of Stem Cell Injunction →
This decision reverses last year’s injunction of NIH’s hESC funding policies, ensuring (for the time being) that hESC funding and research will continue. The so-called Dickey-Wicker amendment, the basis for the original lawsuit and probably the silliest amendment name ever, was ambiguous and did not expressly prohibit ESC research.
So basically, this is a victory for US stem cell...

Genetic Disease and Royal Weddings
It’s no secret that descendants of Queen Victoria are at risk for a genetic blood disorder, the result of royal inbreeding in a small and highly related mating population.
So, since some fresh genes are joining the family today (Kate Middleton), here’s the case for and against royal inbreeding, genetic-style.

Little-known fact: The shuttle Endeavour is spelled all screwy and British-like (or normal, and British-like, depending on your perspective), as an homage to Capt. James Cook’s ship that took him to the South Pacific.
It’s final launch is scheduled for 3:47 PM EST, tomorrow. Stream it live on NASA TV.

BUT WAIT! They haven’t had their MMR vaccine at age 1! How will they have caught teh autismz!?!
In all seriousness, early detection is an awesome plan for every disease disorder, but efforts like this run the risk of hyping borderline symptoms, freaking out parents who are already terrified...

Scientific journal Cell gets royal wedding fever,...
From Ivan Oransky’s Retraction Watch blog, I give you the result of what happens when a respected journal like Cell tries to frame their best papers of the week a la Royal Wedding:
Below, find a few choice excerpts:
Although few can relate to William’s particular challenge of searching for a future bride amidst such an overwhelming number of would-be princesses, his problem was...
Hey, who's that guy over there?
A little while back, someone asked me about my Tumblr avatar, that weird-looking dog over there. It’s obviously not very “science-y”, so what’s the deal?
Truth is, when I started my Tumblr a year ago, I knew I would be interested in science news and science outreach, but I didn’t realize how many people would be so excited to hear about it. I found that picture...
therodentqueen asked: Hey there! I just read the question you answered about science journalism and how difficult it is to write for the masses. I was wondering if you've ever read anything by Mary Roach, a journalist who has written several popular science books. The one book that I've read, Stiff, hardly goes into textbook-like detail, yet she obviously does an incredible amount of research and is...

Right, then our first step is to make a documentary about… what is it you research? And then appeal to the wonder it makes you feel and make that accessible to scientific laypeople. And then we have Sagan/Bill Nye 2.0
Nah, it doesn’t have to be about what I study, I’ll talk about anything...

We’ve got to reproduce this effect with more scientists! I move that the next meme/popular scientist is Feynmann!
More scientists? Hey, I’m a scientist, can I volunteer to be the next Sagan or Feynmann? Let’s get on this, people.

Warmer oceans release CO2 faster than thought →
New Scientist reports that the release of CO2 from deep oceans, as will be the case with a warming Earth, is likely to happen much faster than anticipated. It could start as soon as 200 years from now, instead of the original estimates of 500-1000 years.
Not like we needed another ticking time bomb in terms of the environment or anything.

Grad students eat less hot wings if you leave the... →
At an all-you-can eat buffet in a sports bar, it was tested whether people would eat less if they knew how much they had already eaten. 50 graduate students (34 women; M age = 24.1 yr.) were seated at 21 tables randomly assigned to be bussed (leftover wings removed) or unbussed (wings left on table). The 31 students at the bussed tables ate more than those at the unbussed tables (7 wings vs. 5.5...
