Greg Laden's Blog: The Origin of Wine →
[…] The short and snarky answer to the question of the origin of wine is that we don’t know. Grapes can ferment on the vine, so if that’s wine, then it does not have a cultural origin, but is rather a part of nature, getting birds and small mammals drunk for a very very long time. But that is not what we really mean when we say “wine.” What we mean is something you make from grapes, it contains...

So... doesn't the word "entropy" pretty much prove...
No it doesn’t, jrockchocolate: Entropy- the tenancy towards disorder in any system So, if everything is always coming apart and heading towards chaos… how did molecules “come together” to create the universe? Something had to be there so put them together… The best explanation (that I’ve come across) to resolve the entropy/Big Bang conflict is called The Arrow of Time....

Soup: Frustrated, annoyed and fed up →
climateadaptation: Tired of pesky flies in his soup, soupsoup takes a break. Say it ain’t so! Tumblr has become terribly unstable. My theme just changed format for no reason whatsoever, my posts are showing up multiple times, posts are getting lost after I send them. I can’t deal with trying to hack together fixes for this. I can’t spend time putting together posts only for them to be… Not...

Oh yeah, I guess I should mention that I am going on vacation this week. Austin will have to survive without me. I’ll try to satisfy your science-y needs too, but I make no guarantees. I will be enjoying a nice break from the heat up in the mountains :) Of course, I’ll have to satisfy MY science-y needs, too …

Highlights of the Texas Board of Education hearing...
I put together a Storify featuring the highlights of the SBOE testimony and hearing this week as they debated whether to adopt materials that were pro-science or pro-intelligent design. Evolution won the day in the end, and it was great to see so many people come out to speak in favor of sound science. Check it out after the break …

The ability of a bird to fly using nothing more than the beautifully evolved aerodynamics of their wings is one of nature’s greatest wonders. We’ve been trying to copy it for a century or more. Now, when I tell you that this video features a robot bird (called SmartBird) flying in almost perfect bird-like fashion, well you aren’t really going to understand how amazing that is...

jdht-deactivated20130108 asked: My last question was not finished. I had been typing it on my phone and I accidentally hit "Submit."

Question:

I recently read "Born to Run" by Chris McDougall and was wondering how you feel about the issue. There are many seemingly good arguments on both sides of the barefoot running issue but I, as the 16-year-old commoner, cannot decipher which...
