On the Consciousness of Animals . . .
Last month in Cambridge, several of the world’s experts in the biology, philosophy and psychology of consciousness gathered. Where does it originate and manifest itself? What is the biology behind it? What, in the animal kingdom (or beyond) possesses it? Simply what … IS it?
The conversations happening in those halls were likely some of the most intelligent happening on Earth at that...

But as Neil pointed out the other day: Blue moons are not rare. They happen more frequently than Presidential elections.

What Happens to Aquatic Mammals When Hurricanes...
Got this question on Twitter this morning, so I threw together this ecology lesson. Isaac made its second landfall early this morning, flooding the Gulf coast with torrential rain and storm surge. So what happens to aquatic mammals like dolphins, whales and manatees? And wildlife in general?

“To reflect the ongoing structural changes in the adolescent and...

The Sky is NOT the Limit
X Prize Foundation founder Peter Diamandis drops some inspiring words on ya about how space inspired him to create inspiration in others.
“I want my kids to grow up in a world of hope where they know they can go out there and solve the world’s grand challenges.”
Yep. Like he said … you win.

There are 10 million trillion microbes on the... →
… according to the newest estimates just released by German biologists.
Based on the mass of a single E. coli bacterium being about 665 femtograms, that means that the ocean floor contains about 0.2 exagrams of microbial biomass, or somewhere in the neighborhood of 600,000 Empire State Buildings.
Oh, and that’s less than 10% of the previous estimates. We were WAYYYYYY off! More at...
