Adenovirus, the virus responsible for ~10% of respiratory infections in children, has been structurally mapped by researchers at Scripps.
It took more than ten years, but the team of scientists were able to use the patterns of diffraction from x-ray beams shot at viruses to deduce its structure. Detailed knowledge such as this is key in the battle to produce new antiviral drugs.
