A Few Million Monkeys Randomly Recreate Shakespeare

The video you just watched is from one of my favorite Simpsons scenes. It refers to something called the Infinite Monkey Theorem, which says that if you had an infinite number of monkeys typing monkey gibberish into typewriters, that at some point you would recreate Shakespeare, or whatever writing you can think of.

Google even used the idea for an April Fools prank about how they get their page rankings from warehouses full of pigeons.

Well, a guy named Jesse Anderson has now done the impossible. Except that instead of monkeys he used computerized “monkey-typewriter” algorithms and Amazon’s cloud computing service. By having the programs randomly create ASCII data and then cross-referencing that with the works of Shakespeare, any time the program matched a word in the text it was saved.

He has now recreated A Lover’s Complaint and will be continuing on with the remainder of the Bard’s works.

No monkeys were harmed in the making of this Shakespeare.
