Rubisco. Laue diffraction pattern from a crystal of the enzyme Rubisco (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase) from a plant. Rubisco is thought to be the most abundant protein in nature. Found in all plants it fixes carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. This is an X-ray crystallography image, a way to determine the molecular structure of Rubisco by bombarding a crystal sample with X- rays. Laue diffraction uses the whole spectrum of X-radiation to gain the colours seen here. At centre are shorter blue wavelengths; longer (red) wavelengths are at outer edges. Repeated patterns reveal the structure of Rubisco’s crystal lattice.

I want to live in a nation where more people recognize RuBisCO than recognize Nabisco!

About

I'm Joe Hanson, Ph.D. biologist and host/writer of PBS Digital Studios' It's Okay To Be Smart. Check out my "Episode Extras" here. There's a lot of amazing science out there. Let's go discover it together.

Joe's science book recommendations, from brains to biology to space to art to physics.

This is an indie blog that takes many hours a week to publish. If you'd like to support It's Okay To Be Smart, please consider even a small donation.
