Q:What do you think about the UN name Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman as the official ambassador for Earth if we ever communicate with alien life? My skeptical side tells me this is just a lot of hot air and the title holds no actual weight, the giddy side wonders if something has already been discovered that we'd need this for.
Is this women getting paid for this? Would the U.N. actually pay someone on a hope that she will be of some use in our life times? Sorry for the short rant, just want to get your general opinion on it.
Like many, I heard this news a couple days ago and started laughing to myself because it sounded so ridiculous. Then I stopped laughing, because the U.N. of all organizations should not be fiddling around with silly propositions like this. Did I mention I thought it was silly?
Well, rest easy. I don’t know how this got misunderstood, but it’s an error, or worse, a hoax. The astrophysicist in question is head of the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs, and she is speaking at a Royal Society meeting about alien encounters. But she is not an alien ambassador. In her words, “… it sounds really cool, but I have to deny it.”
