Behold the “Brinicle”, the icy arm of frozen death in the Antarctic Sea

Watch as starfish run in fear and humans stare in awe at this super-chilled channel of brine and ice, so cold that it could kill anything in its path. It’s a truly odd phenomenon of hydrology, go check out this BBC Nature website for a full explanation of how it works.

I'm working to change the way science is communicated and restore it to its rightful place. This is an indie blog that takes many hours a week to publish. If you'd like to support It's Okay To Be Smart or just buy me a drink, please consider even a small donation. Together we CAN!
