Check it out, this 1838 image is the oldest picture of a person ever in the world! From Wikipedia:

Boulevard du Temple, Paris, IIIe arrondissement, Daguerreotype. The first picture of a person. The image shows a busy street, but because exposure time was over ten minutes, the traffic was moving too much to appear. The exception is the man at the bottom left, who stood still getting his boots polished long enough to show.

BoingBoing also recently found a picture of a couple people in Cincinnati that qualifies as the oldest picture of people in America.

An update of my post from yesterday … I guess those two fellas in the daguerrotype are the first Americans in a photo, since this dates from 1838.  The French win this battle!
