Most Stories Have a Hero: An Essay on Evolutionary Theory

Listen, I don’t have time to go line by line and explain why your line of thinking is so far off base, because I know that you don’t want to believe in evolution.  I could fill pages with scientific support, and you would do what 12th-graders do and be independent to a fault and disregard it.

But, I am also not here to belittle you … I am the type of scientist who would rather engage people and make sure they actually know what they are talking about, and then let you draw your own conclusions.  But I will address a couple things:

-Your assertion that there are armies of scientists scoffing and insulting religion, or that there is even something called an “Evolutionist”, is incorrect and insulting.  Sure, there are some pretty intense anti-religion types who are scientists, but they are a vast minority.  The rest of us, regardless of whether we possess religious beliefs, are merely dedicated to explaining the natural world based on questions we can hypothesize answers to and real data we can collect. The real truth is that scientists are people, and some of them have spiritual beliefs.  The ones that don’t are far more tolerant than your essay is.

-You were never a giraffe

That is all.  I invite you to follow my page, follow some of the other science pages on here and just see what scientists really have to say and what we really work on.  Don’t read Richard Dawkins, read Sean Carroll.  Don’t read Christopher Hitchens, read Carl Sagan.  Science isn’t your enemy, we are just curious people who prefer to answer our questions with what we can see, touch, observe, and know.

pgstjean:

It’s all well and good to call me confused and say that if I would but come into the fold of science I would understand all and be enlightened. Yet you have not refuted anything having to do with my definition of evolutionary study and have yet to offer me any proof whatsoever that your theory is in any way more feasible than that of ID.

I'm working to change the way science is communicated and restore it to its rightful place. This is an indie blog that takes many hours a week to publish. If you'd like to support It's Okay To Be Smart or just buy me a drink, please consider even a small donation. Together we CAN!
