Space Junk 3-D
For every traditional man-made satellite in orbit around Earth, there exists at least 200 pieces of orbiting space debris.
And that only counts the stuff larger than 1 cm. The problem is so bad, that we devote entire telescopes and tracking stations to monitoring all of it. The ISS crew has to regularly retreat to their rescue craft as they narrowly miss collisions with debris.
It could be as small as a stray bolt, or a chunk of ice. But since satellites move so fast while in orbit, even flecks of paint can deliver major damage to spacecraft, as happened to Endeavour in 1994 when a window was dented halfway through by a paint chip.
Space Junk 3-D is a new IMAX movie that explores how we got to this point, what the dangers are, and how we might get out of it. I can’t wait to see it, and we can’t wait to start picking up the trash.
