1,000 Days of Lunar Reconnaissance

A couple days ago, I answered a reader question about the violent history of our moon, and why some areas looked so much more cratered than others. And where did the dark area of the face come from?

To celebrate the upcoming 1,000 day-i-versary of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) being in operation, the fine folks at NASA put together this animation showing the truly fierce adolescence of our sole natural satellite. The LRO project, combined with years of other astronomical observations, has been able to piece together a kind of life story of the moon, studying its geology and internal structure so that we can pinpoint its origin and composition.

In other words, YOU think growing up was hard? The moon had it much worse. Like a punching bag for every flying rock in the young solar system, stuffed in its locker of megaton-level impact events, and left with the scars to prove it.
