The New Moon in the Old Moon’s Arms We’re four days past this month’s “new moon”, the period of darkness just before the first sliver of the sun’s reflection peeks around the formerly waning disk. This image out of Iran was taken just prior to the new moon on March 20, and shows how much ambient light is still present on the lunar surface. We are prevented from seeing this “Earthshine” from most places on Earth, but next time you look up at a crescent (maybe tonight?), try and find it. (via APOD)
