Planet Swallowed Whole By Its Own Star?
That’s some astronomical parental cannibalism, man. The presence of high amounts of lithium in star BD+48 70 (in the constellation Perseus) are odd, and it is a sign that the red giant may have, or be in the process of, devouring one of its planets.
It’s a fate that will likely befall our inner Solar System as well, when our Sun reaches maximum swell in 8 billion years, eradicating Mercury, Venus … and probably Earth.

About

I'm Joe Hanson, Ph.D. biologist and host/writer of PBS Digital Studios' It's Okay To Be Smart. Check out my "Episode Extras" here. There's a lot of amazing science out there. Let's go discover it together.
