Pics Or It (Humanity, That Is) Didn’t Happen:
Trevor Paglen sits down with Claire Evans to discuss his project The Last Pictures, a silicon disc full of human images, set to be launched aboard a satellite destined for geosynchronous orbit.
What’s special about geosynchronous orbit? At that very particular distance from Earth, a satellite can remain for billions of years without falling to Earth. It is a time capsule of our species, our good and our bad, that will outlive us all.
For me, the image of a spacecraft in perpetual orbit is quite unlike one that travels off to the stars. Moreover, the [Voyager] Golden Record has images of a feel-good utopia. There are no images of war, inequality, strife or suffering. The Last Pictures is a much more melancholic project. It is a story about a deeply troubled species whose future is very uncertain.
Fascinating stuff.
