A Brain for Rhythm
In September of this year, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart led over a thousand people in a drum circle while neuroscientists monitored his brain activity (that’s it, above). That group of brain researchers believes that the brain might hold certain natural rhythm circuits, and that rhythm can influence everything from perception to learning to memory.
Some regions in the brain communicate better when they fire in particular rhythms and patterns, and when they don’t fire in sync, it can be a sign of deeper brain malfunctions. Deciphering those rhythms might help diagnose certain disorders.
The most intriguing part? Using games and music to create new rhythms might one day be used to treat neurological problems from seizures to dementia!
