The Fastest Noms in the West

Not only are frogfish some of the ocean’s best disguise artists, they have some pretty amazing evolutionary adaptations when it comes to eating.

This is a high speed video, shot at 1000 frames per second, that shows a frogfish extending its mouthparts out to surround its prey, creating an enormous suction cannon that literally sucks the food into its gullet.

Oh, and this whole sequence takes 0.17 seconds.

Biomimicry is one of evolution’s most mind-blowing avenues of adaptation. Above are three examples of frogfish biomimicry, a family of fish that separately mimics algae, sponges and even sea urchins. They evolved these costumes as a way to avoid predators and become better predators themselves.
