The Evolution of Marsupials
These mammalian oddities, with strange evolutionary diversions like pouches and three-channeled vaginas, are a perfect case study in not only what can happen when the evolution of a group of species is allowed to proceed in isolation (like on the island continent Australia), but also retells the story of our planet’s geologic evolution!
Marsupials can be tracked all the way back to what is now China, where they made their way across the ancient supercontinents to the Americas, finally ending up in what would break off and become Australia.
Check out this video for the awesome story of marsupial, and Earth’s, evolution:

About

I'm Joe Hanson, Ph.D. biologist and host/writer of PBS Digital Studios' It's Okay To Be Smart. Check out my "Episode Extras" here. There's a lot of amazing science out there. Let's go discover it together.
