About US

Ever wondered why blue is so rare in nature? How an igloo keeps you warm? Or what fire actually is? Welcome to Be Smart, the award-winning science education show that's made curiosity contagious for over 5 million subscribers worldwide.

Since 2013, from our home base in Austin, TX, we've produced over 250 episodes exploring everything from quantum physics in your morning coffee to the evolutionary biology behind your dog's behavior. Our videos have been viewed more than half a billion times on YouTube alone, with our most popular episodes tallying more than 20 million views.

Be Smart has earned multiple Webby Awards and Telly Awards for excellence in web video, along with a prestigious AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award. As part of the PBS Digital Studios network, we're proud to be one of public media's flagship science education programs.

Our work has been praised by educators and families alike. We have a 5-star rating from Common Sense Media, and numerous teachers and parents have called Be Smart their favorite science education YouTube channel thanks to our infectious enthusiasm and entertaining approach to even the most complex of topics.

OUR MISSION

Think of us as your favorite passionate and nerdy science friend. We believe science isn't just for scientists. It's for anyone who's ever looked at the world and wondered "why?" Through engaging storytelling, stunning visuals, and genuine enthusiasm, we translate complex science into entertaining stories that spark wonder (and a few laughs). We collaborate with experts from around the world, featuring diverse voices from science while modeling what it means to be endlessly curious.

OUR HOST

Be Smart was created by Joe Hanson, Ph.D., a molecular biologist turned science communicator whose work has appeared in publications like WIRED, Nautilus, Scientific American, and Texas Monthly. Today, Joe serves as host, head writer, and producer. Austin’s Spotzen Productions handles filming and post-production.

Beyond Be Smart, Joe also hosts PBS Terra's "Overview," using stunning aerial photography to reveal Earth's natural phenomena. He's also the current host of GBH's "High School Quiz Show."
